Hops

What are hops in sports?

Jumping ability

In sports, a person's hops is their jumping ability. For example, if a basketball player is 5'10" and can dunk on a 10' hoop, they have hops.

The term comes from the hops that animals like kangaroos and rabbits exhibit when bouncing around. Likewise, you will likely hear hops used in basketball, football, or baseball when a player displays an impressive vertical when jumping up to catch a ball or dunk an alley oop.

You might also see hops online, especially on sports Twitter. People typically use it when remarking about a player's ability to jump high in a highlight or arguing which player can jump higher.

Example

Wow, Johnson's got some serious hops
I can't believe he caught that!
