Subtweet

What does subtweet mean?

Subliminal tweet

A subtweet is a tweet that is about someone but doesn't explicitly mention them. People use subtweets when they want to discuss someone without bringing the conversation to their attention. For example, a user who wants to rag on Elon Musk may post "EMusk has just about run Twitter into the ground, but here I am anyway."

Subtweets may include the person-being-discussed's handle without an @, or they may obfuscate the person's name further (to prevent that person from searching for their name and finding the conversation). Usually, subtweets contain criticism, insults, or other shade that a user doesn't want to tweet directly at the person being discussed (for whatever reason).

Example

George needs to stop subtweeting me and just come at me; I'm sick of his pussyfooting
