When someone gives you props, they're expressing respect or recognition for a job well done. This abbreviation is a shortened form of propers, a slang term that became popular in the 1960s.
Propers is short for "proper respect" or "proper recognition." According to singer Aretha Franklin, who used propers in her popular song Respect, propers originated as part of AAVE in Detroit. Over time, propers morphed into the more-concise props.
