Owned

What does owned mean?

Dominated

Gamers, athletes, and others use owned to mean dominated or humiliated. Most often, players say they owned an opponent after decisively defeating them.

The origin of owned

In the 1990s, hackers began using owned to refer to instances in which they gained administrative control over (thus "owning") another user's PC. This usage quickly spread to the gaming community, where it was picked up by braggadocios gamers to describe matches in which they wrecked opponents.

These days, this slang version of owned has become popular enough that you'll regularly encounter it online. For example, social media users may say that one user owned another, after the former delivered a particularly vicious insult to the latter.

Example

Oh, how does that feel? You just got owned!
