Oppo Boppo

What is an oppo boppo in baseball?

Opposite field home run

An "oppo boppo" is a home run hit to the side of the outfield opposite the side of the plate the batter is standing. For example, a left-handed batter that hits a home run over the left field fence hits an oppo boppo.

You may hear or see oppo boppo in various baseball-related contexts. For example, an announcer may exclaim, "Bryce Harper with an oppo boppo to tie the game!" Or, an MLB fan may post on social media, "I thought all hope was lost when the Brewers tied it with that oppo boppo in the ninth."

Origin of oppo boppo

Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster Tom McCarthy coined the "oppo boppo" slang term. "Oppo" is an abbreviation for "opposite field," and "boppo" comes from "bopping" (hitting) a home run (boppo rhymes with oppo).
