What does metagame mean?

Outside game preparation and strategies

A gaming term that refers to the strategies discussed and planned outside of gameplay that affect how players play inside of the game; used to anticipate and adapt to how an opponent will play (the player is said to be "metagaming" his opponent); often includes an evolving set of tactics as gamers become more skilled at gameplay.

The metagame has switched so heavily lately. You hardly see any of the same strategies used anymore
