G-man

What is a G-man?

A government agent

G-man is slang for a U.S. government agent, most commonly, an FBI agent. Its origins are unclear, but the name dates back to at least the Prohibition era in the 1920s when gangsters, including Al Capone, abbreviated government agents as "G-men" to disparage them for breaking up their illegal operations.

The name has persisted throughout the years, particularly in media, such as news stories, books, music, and movies. Nowadays, the name is not much of an insult. Instead, many use it simply as the name for the occupation.

Additionally, people use the nickname primarily to refer to FBI agents (along with the feds abbreviation). For example, if you see a drug bust portrayed in a film, one of the criminals may yell, "G-man is coming!"
