Em

What is an em?

E-mail

An "em" is an email, which is electronic mail sent through an email service, such as Microsoft Outlook, Gmail, or Apple Mail. Most people use the abbreviation in emails and when texting or messaging online.

Rudimentary email messaging dates back to the early-1970s, but it didn't become widely used until the late-1990s and early-2000s, as Internet access grew. Now, people email daily for personal and business purposes.

People use "em" because it is a faster way to write "email." For example, you may text your friend, "Did you get the em from him yet?" Or, you may message that Brad is busy "eming" his co-workers.
