When a player goes coast to coast in a sport, they travel the entire length of the playing field, whether it be a basketball court, hockey rink, soccer pitch, etc. It comes from the east and west coasts of the United States, which are situated on opposite horizontal sides of the country.
People most often use "coast to coast" to describe a player that takes possession of a ball, puck, etc., and goes the entire length of the playing area, usually ending up scoring. For example, a basketball commentator may say, "Howard takes the ball coast to coast and slams it home!"
