Camping

What does camping mean in gaming?

Staying in one spot

In gaming, camping doesn't refer to the act of pitching a tent and roughing it in the great outdoors. Instead, it refers to a strategy in which a player stays (or "camps") in the same spot for a prolonged period of time, because doing so gives them a strategic advantage.

For example, in multiplayer FPS games, players who know a game's maps well often camp in hidden, highly-defensible positions, from which they can snipe other players. These players may not move from their position for an entire game, unless their teammates or their opponents force them to (e.g. by figuring out a way to kill that player).

As another example, in some PvP MMORPGs, players who have been killed spawn at the location of their corpse. In these games, high-level players may camp at low-level players' corpses, to repeatedly kill those players (and farm XP).

Example

I can't resurrect for more than two seconds because that jerk won't stop camping my corpse and killing me!
